Heidi Allen MP recently backed an amendment to the Agriculture Bill to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat in the UK. This latest step follows her letter to the Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific questioning the government’s position on the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat in the Far East.
Amendment NC23, supported by 15 Conservative backbenchers, seeks to “prohibit the human consumption, transport and possession of dog and cat meat”, and would be punishable by up to six months in prison.
The sale of dog and cat meat and their slaughter in abattoirs is currently illegal in the UK. However, the consumption of dog and cat meat is still technically legal, creating an unintentional loophole in the law. Closing the loophole enables us to send a powerful message about the UK’s moral position on the act, and animal welfare in general.
Commenting Heidi said, “ I am pleased to add my name in support of this amendment to close the current loophole and ensure the UK leads by example on issues of animal welfare”
Heidi continues to demonstrate her love for animals and her understanding on the importance of issues surrounding animal welfare through her activity in Westminster.
